Intestate succession is the method that each individual state or jurisdiction determines heirship of a deceased person who dies either without having executed a will or whose will is found to be invalid or does not totally dispose of his or her property. This subject is discussed much more fully later on in the book, including the downside of allowing the state to “prepare” your will.
