Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using self-report inventories.

What will be an ideal response?

Heppner, et al. (1992) have noted the advantages and disadvantages of self-report and inventories. One of the most important advantages to researchers in using self-report and inventories is the ease and time of administering them. Self-report approaches generally do not require extensive training to administer, and for the most part are brief. A second advantage is that the researcher can assess non-observable events such as cognitions and feelings that generally cannot be measured through direct observation. Heppner, et al. (1992) suggested that the most serious problem with self-report measures is the possibility of distortion or bias by the responder. Respondents may deny or repress feelings or cognitions that are troublesome or incongruent with how they see themselves.
