Discuss how exercising can help people decrease stress.
What will be an ideal response?
Experts on stress believe that the human body long ago developed a stress response to help people handle dangerous situations. Early peoples had to face storms or attacks by wild animals and human enemies. The basic responses are either to fight the danger or to run away. For this reason, the physical changes in response to stress are known as the "fight-or-flight syndrome." Because the body's response to stress is to get ready for physical action, a logical way to respond to workplace stress is to look for an outlet through physical activity. Some people enjoy running, walking, or riding a bicycle before or after work-or as a way to get to work. Others prefer to work out at a health club, participate in sports, or dance. Besides letting off steam, exercising strengthens the body's organs so that they can better withstand stress.
