victimizations are associated with psychological effects and higher rates of suicide than
their peers. Problems often originate in the home. LGBT adolescents are nearly 3 times
as likely to report being a victim of childhood physical or sexual abuse, especially for
boys. A disproportionate number of LGBT youth run away from home, which increases
the odds of involvement in the juvenile justice system. Up to 40% of homeless youth are
LGBT. LGBT youth are twice as likely to be arrested and detained for status and other
nonviolent offenses. Between 13% and 15% of youthful offenders formally processed in
the juvenile courts and being held in detention centers are LGBT. Some studies find that
LGBT youth are 3 times more likely to be held in detention for running away or
nonviolent offenses, and upward of 50% of girls in the California juvenile justice system
identified as LGBT. The effects of being LGBT can intersect with other characteristics of
youth resulting in cumulative effects. For example up to 60% of the detained LGBT
youth nationwide are Black or Hispanic, resulting in other effects.
