• Strategic instruction: The carefully controlled combination of what students already know with what they need to learn so that the relationship between these two elements is clear and the instruction results in knowledge
• Judicious review: Structured opportunities for the students to recall or apply previously taught information
• Primed background knowledge: The curriculum takes advantage of students’ previous knowledge. Preexisting knowledge affects new learning. The curriculum should be aligned with learner knowledge and expertise, consider necessary preskills, and prepare the learner for successful performance.
