Explain the relationship between the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and the amygdala in moral development.

What will be an ideal response?

There is great connectivity between the vmPFC and the amygdala, a part of the brain responsible for emotion, suggesting that, with age, cognitive and emotional processing of moral problems becomes increasingly coordinated. In support, other research has shown that adults who score high on moral reasoning tasks tend to show greater functional connectivity between the vmPFC and the amygdala. Moreover, connections between the vmPFC and amygdala increase with age. It is thought that the amygdala triggers automatic emotional responses to stimuli. The vmPFC integrates this information to evaluate the problem and determine responses.
