Which jugular vein pulsation results from the slow buildup of blood in the right atrium during ventricular contractions?
a. a wave c. g wave
b. c wave d. v wave
D
The "v" wave results from the slow buildup of blood in the right atrium during the ventricular contraction (when the tricuspid valve is closed) and occurs during late systole. The "v" wave disappears when the tricuspid valve opens and blood flows rapidly into the right ventricle. The "a" wave is produced by the contraction of the right atrium and it reflects the backflow of blood into the vena cava as the right atrium ejects blood into the right ventricle. The "a" wave occurs just before S1 . The "c" wave occurs at the end of S1 and is produced when the right ventricle begins to contract. The "c" wave is caused by both the slight backflow of blood into the right atrium when the ventricular contraction occurs and the bulging of the tricuspid valve
backward toward the right atrium because of increased right ventricular pressure. There is no "g" wave.
