Describe the role of climate change, environmental degradation, and extreme weather in migration. What is the international community doing to meet the needs of these migrants? What is missing from the international response to migration due to climate and environmental issues?

What will be an ideal response?

Environmental issues, weather, etc. cause the most forced displacements, but these migrants are not considered refugees in the international community. Currently, there are no international protection instruments to ensure humanitarian aid for the victims, whether they move internally, as most do, or across borders. Because displacement due to disaster and climate change will worsen, the mandate of the UN Commission on Human Rights is expanding to include the protection of victims of natural disasters. Students should address how developed nations must act on climate change as well as how migrants forced to flee due to environmental disaster need protections under international laws.
