The four ways discussed in your textbook are:

Depending on the jurisdiction and the specific case, inmates may be released from prison in a number of ways. Examples include expiration of the maximum sentence allowed by law (known as "maxing out"); commutation, or reduction of the original sentence by executive authority; release at the discretion of a parole authority; and mandatory release. Of those ways, the two most common are release at the discretion of a parole authority and mandatory release.
