List the cortical components of the motor system and their functions in performing movements.
What will be an ideal response?
The motor cortex consists of the primary motor cortex and two main secondary motor areas, which are the supplementary motor area and the premotor cortex. All three areas contain a map of the body, with more cortical space devoted to the parts of the body that require more detailed movements. Planning of movements in the cortex begins with the association areas, and final processing occurs in the primary motor cortex. Other cortical areas that also play some role in movement are the prefrontal cortex, the somatosensory cortex, the posterior parietal cortex, the basal ganglia, and the cerebellum. See Table 11.2 for a list of the structures by motor function.
