Why is Achenbach and Edelbrock’s system of classification useful for teachers?
What will be an ideal response?
Students should mention the externalizing/internalizing dimension of this system. This should be followed by a description of externalizing (acting out or aggression) and internalizing (avoidance or withdrawal).
• The psychological implications could be discussed. For example, externalized behaviors “. . . may represent a lack of self-control or impulsivity. . .”, and internalized behaviors “. . . may be a child who is sad or depressed.”
• Specific labels associated with the externalized/internalized categories and related to other systems could be included. Table 6.2 in the text does this with a comparison to Quay and Peterson’s system.
