Samuel Huntington defined civilizations as the broadest level of cultural identity people can have that are distinct from one another. Huntington identified eight civilizations: Western, Confucian, Japanese, Islamic, Hindu, Slavic Orthodox, Latin American, and African. His thesis is that these civilizations interact but remain in separate entities that could and do clash.
