The Beyond Scared Straight series focuses upon delinquent youth ordered to adult prisons for “shock incarceration” and the crude counseling of adult inmates and prison staff. Innovated in the mid-1970s, such programs were widespread in the United States and often assigned as a condition of juvenile probation.
