C.B.'s brother asks how long C.B. will be paralyzed. How should you respond?
What will be an ideal response?
Tell C.B. and his brother that the length of the paralysis varies by person. Most patients usually
reach the point of greatest weakness or paralysis within 3 to 4 weeks after the first symptoms occur.
Symptoms then stabilize at this level for a period of days, weeks, or sometimes months. The recovery
period may be as little as a few weeks or as long as a few years. About 30% of those with GBS still
have residual weakness after 3 years.
