Explain the importance of formal and informal factors of criminal sanctions within the rational choice theory.

What will be an ideal response?

Two main components of rational choice theory include formal and informal factors of criminal sanctions. Both formal and informal factors are acknowledged by a perpetrator to decide whether or not to a commit a crime. Formal factors include official sanctions or punishments for criminal behavior such as fines. Informal factors include losing the respect of others and losing ones social status. Most individuals are usually more affected by informal factors than formal factors.
