Each year, vast amounts of the raw materials and energy produced in the world are used in the construction industry, generating millions of tons of greenhouse gasses and additional concentrations of solid wastes. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the amount of energy consumed by buildings of all types accounts for around 40 percent of our total annual primary energy consumption, more than is used by industry or transportation. More than half of that total was attributed to residential building use, with the balance ascribed to commercial buildings. Around 65 percent of total electricity use is used in the heating, cooling, and lighting needs of buildings. Combined, this translates into buildings contributing a solid 30 percent of total annual carbon emissions for the United States.
