If you share 99% of your nucleotide sequence with a chimpanzee and only 50% of your alleles with your own daughter, why aren't you more closely related to the chimpanzee than your own daughter?

What will be an ideal response?

The alleles that you share with your daughter are identical because she inherited them
directly from you (any differences are due only to rare mutations). The other 50% of your
daughter's alleles, which she inherited from her other parent, are at least 99.9% identical to
the ones she inherited from you.
All humans are genetically very similar. Since chimpanzee are closely related to human, they
are also very genetically similar. While you may only share 50% of alleles with your daughter,
your nucleotide sequence is almost 99.9%. Through shared evolutionary history, humans
and chimpanzees have many similarities in their genomes. However, humans and chimps
have fewer than 50% of their alleles in common, and furthermore many of those alleles are
more divergent in nucleotide sequence.

Monterey cypress trees grow along the coast of California with most of their branches clustered on one side of the tree, pointing away from the sea. If a monterey cypress seed is germinated more than 50 miles inland, the tree grows up with a symmetric distribution of branches, just like other evergreens. This scenario demonstrates which statement about genetics?

a. The windblown shape seen in coastal trees is obviously caused by polygenic inheritance. b. The windblown shape seen in coastal trees is obviously determined by their genotypes. c. The windblown shape seen in coastal trees is a result of environmental conditions, not their genes. d. Both the first and second choices are true. e. None of the above.
