Anticonvulsants are used to control or prevent seizures. Aside from cases of epilepsy, seizures may occur as reactions to high fever, drug overdose, or injury and for unexplained reasons. Although the exact mechanism of action of anticonvulsants is unknown, it is thought to stabilize the cell membrane by altering the movement of sodium, potassium, and calcium across the membrane.
Phenytoin (Dilantin) is the major drug prescribed. Others include primidone (Mysoline), ethosuximide (Zarontin), valproic acid (Depakene), carbamazepine (Tegretol), clonazepam (Klonopin), and gabapentin (Neurontin).
