Explain how processes of gentrification, new urbanism and edge cities are impacting urban North America. 62

What will be an ideal response?

Gentrification has meant the displacement of low-income residents in many central-city neighborhoods by higher income residents. It has also meant a revival of residential and commercial activities in these previously blighted communities. This has happened in Seattle, Toronto and Baltimore for instance. Wealthy groups are interested in returning to the central city to live and shop. New urbanism has supported the idea of mixed use and dense communities. These involve communities with both commercial and residential zoning in a dense distribution often near transportation lines. Edge-cities reflect the changing nature of the suburbs. The suburbs are becoming more economically diverse and are increasingly a work destination. However, most residents in the suburbs find themselves commuting long distances to work as is the case in Atlanta and Birmingham.
