S.G. has a normal recovery and is being discharged. When giving her parents discharge
instructions, what will you advise them concerning diet and signs and symptoms to report?
What will be an ideal response?
Diet
• By the time a cleft palate is repaired, the child is usually on a toddler diet.
• The patient should have soft or pureed foods for the first few weeks.
• If the child is old enough, he or she should drink or rinse gently with water after eating to avoid
"pocketing" of food in palate.
• Avoid food items with sharp edges (e.g., toast, chips, crackers, straws) that might compromise the
integrity of the surgical site.
• Forks should be used carefully with young patients.
• This diet will be advanced by the surgeon as the site heals.
Signs and symptoms to report
• Any sign of infection: temperature over 38.6° C (101.5° F), any unusual redness or drainage at site,
increased pain at surgical site.
• Signs of dehydration: decreased intake or urine output.
• Surgical complications: Some surgeons use a packing material that slowly dissolves and the family
might see pieces of it in the oral cavity. It is usually swallowed and absorbed by the patient. This
can be normal. If there are any concerns related to the site or evidence of feedings in the nasal
cavity, S.G.'s parents should call the surgeon or their PCP.
