Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder resulting from paralysis, weakness, or incoordination of the speech musculature that is of neurological origin. Patients may have problems providing respiratory support for speech, articulating sounds, and coordinating articulators. These problems can result in slurred or hypernasal speech. Apraxia of Speech is the difficulty or inability to produce learned speech movements. Verbal apraxia is characterized by difficulty initiating speech, phonating, and imitating movements. Patients may exhibit a slow speech rate, distortions of sounds, and inconsistent errors.
