Discuss the effectiveness of reality therapy when used with individuals from different ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds.
What will be an ideal response?
One of the limitations in working with clients from diverse cultures is that reality therapy might not take into consideration environmental factors such as racism and sexism. These factors might limit the amount of actual control that clients have over their lives. However, Wubbolding (2008) maintains that reality therapy helps clients to focus on the choices they do have. A second limitation is that cultural norms might restrict clients’ expression of their needs. Some Eastern cultures emphasize the group over Western cultures’ emphasis primarily on individuals’ attempt to fulfill their wants and needs. Cultural norms and values might hinder their expression of needs and wants. Moreover, the direct questioning in reality/choice theory needs to be softened when working with individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds. Finally, individuals from some cultures might be reluctant to state what they need.
