Describe how physical fitness became a matter of national security in America after World War II.

What will be an ideal response?

In the aftermath of World War II and with the start of the Cold War, national security was paramount. The number of men who failed their draft physicals was not acceptable. Physical fitness became a matter of national security, especially with the threat of another war looming on the horizon.

Physical fitness became every American's patriotic duty according to President Eisenhower and many of the nation's leaders. Physical education was mandatory in just about every school in America between 1950 and 1975 (the end of the Vietnam War). From middle school through high school, students completed mandatory physical education classes or, in lieu of this, competed in sports teams. Those with physical disabilities also enrolled in adaptive or corrective physical education programs in the nation's schools. Most colleges had a mandatory physical education requirement regardless of major.
