You have been asked to explain the advantages of separate school placements for students with hearing impairments versus placement in the general education.

What will be an ideal response?

The answer should indicate the information in Topic 12.4 "Prevalence and Placement." The percentages of students with hearing loss who attend general education classes is slightly lower than for all students with disabilities. More students with hearing loss attend special classes and separate schools. Students with good communication skills and who participate in extracurricular activities find that inclusive general education settings results in positive educational experiences. They can access the general education curriculum and build friendships with their hearing peers. Students who use manual communications often find the general education setting restrictive because they cannot communicate easily with classmates. In separate schools, everyone uses ASL and the classes and other activities are conducted in a format that can be easily accessed. The separate settings are less restrictive, in this instance, than classes with hearing peers.
