The percentages of students with hearing loss who attend general education classes is slightly lower than for all students with disabilities. More students with hearing loss attend special classes and separate schools. Students with good communication skills and who participate in extracurricular activities find that inclusive general education settings results in positive educational experiences. They can access the general education curriculum and build friendships with their hearing peers. Students who use manual communications often find the general education setting restrictive because they cannot communicate easily with classmates. In separate schools, everyone uses ASL and the classes and other activities are conducted in a format that can be easily accessed. The separate settings are less restrictive, in this instance, than classes with hearing peers.
