List and define the four benefits of virtual work
What will be an ideal response?
Virtual work can benefit the organization and the individual. In their review of
literature on the topic, Bailey & Kurland (2002) demonstrated that there are at least four macrolevel
benefits to this type of work. First, virtual work can significantly reduce real estate costs for
organizations as they no longer have to house each and every employee physically. Second,
employees can use virtual work as a way of attempting to balance the demands of both work and
family. Third, virtual work helps organizations comply with the 1990 Americans with
Disabilities Act. Organizations can now more easily hire individuals with disabilities who may
not be able to perform a job in a traditional manner, but with the assistance of communication
technology and a familiar environment can work effectively and efficiently. Finally, with the
reduction in travel for employees (car, plane, bus, train, etc.) both traffic and air pollution can be
affected positively.
