Discuss the importance of proper mouth orientation in sheep.
What will be an ideal response?
In sheep, the mouth should be sound, with the upper and lower jaws meeting squarely. Jaw defects are high heritable and severely discriminated against. A sheep could be parrot-mouthed (where the upper jaw extends beyond the lower jaw) or monkey-mouthed (where the lower jaw extends beyond the upper jaw). Both problems can impact how sheep consume feed. If the jaw does not meet squarely, the sheep can waste feed, which reduces efficiency and profitability. The sheep also have to work harder and longer to get the same rate of gain. Sheep with mouth defects have difficulty grazing properly_
