Name three manifestations of irrational thinking concerning love, and give examples of it.
What will be an ideal response?
Narcissism is one of these manifestations. It stems from highly valuing one’s own qualities and,
therefore, falling in love with someone who possesses them. For example, a man who considers himself
intelligent can fall for an equally intelligent but boring or dishonest woman. Magical identification is
choosing a partner with characteristics that we want to have ourselves, hoping that by identification, we
will become the same. So for example, a woman who wants to be beautiful chooses an attractive man,
hoping that she will herself somehow become prettier. Finally, some believe that life is too hard and feel
powerless, and therefore, they search for a partner who can fulfill their caretaking needs. So a person
can, after several failures in personal, business, or social life, begin to feel incapable of surviving on his
or her own and, therefore, find a partner who will simply take care of him or her and make life easier.
