Using the Internet, examine the eff ect on our world food supply of using a large percentage of the U.S. corn crop for the production of ethanol.

What will be an ideal response?

Approximately 30 percent of the U.S. production of corn is anticipated to be used for
the production of ethanol in 2012. At the same time, the worldwide demand for corn is
expected to grow to 793 tons in 2009. This growth in demand is causing food prices to
rise throughout the world. A fear exists that the use of corn for ethanol production will
have an impact on the worldwide price and availability of corn. Farmers are saying
that is not the case, and they will grow more corn to meet the demand. Economists
are not so sure, and they say a risk exists that food prices could rise in the third world
to the point where starvation is inevitable.
