What are the advantages and disadvantages of leading virtual teams?

Advantage is that experts or most skilled individuals for a particular project can be brought onto team, because membership is not limited by geography. Team membership can include those from all over a country, or even throughout the world. Team members can also be highly motivated as they are allowed to work remotely from home or participate in a high level project with others from all over the country or the world. A disadvantage is that there could be less direct control or access, so that members could find it easier to slip out of sight or slip through the cracks. It could be more difficult to monitor. This can allow for more free-ridership or social loafing. Another disadvantage are same communication challenges that come from virtual communication media. Some media do not convey emotions well or allow for complex interactions. Therefore the type of media used should be appropriate for the task at hand. In addition, videoconferencing should be used whenever possible to overcome some of these challenges. Also, a team leader might want to set some communication ground rules in an attempt to manage these virtual communication challenges.
