What are the most salient differences between the patronage and merit-based systems?

What will be an ideal response?

In a patronage system, personal connections to powerful individuals are often rewarded with appointments to important positions, job opportunities, or contracts to do work for the government. Loyalty is a hallmark of the patronage system, and rewards build this loyalty. In a merit-based system, the personal and professional qualifications of individuals determine the likelihood of obtaining a job, appointed position, or contract. Merit-based positions require those who seek them to be in competition with others to demonstrate their particular worth, and these competitions are often held anonymously to keep politics out of the selection process.
