Perry discovered that college students shifted from more simplistic to more complex thinking. Based on Perry's work, West identified the following 4 stages of intellectual development:
Stage 1 Absolute- believes there is a right and wrong answer
Stage 2 Personal- focuses on the value of opinions
Stage 3 Rules-based- relies on rules to judge opinions or claims
Stage 4- Evaluative- Formal strategies to evaluate opinions and evidence are used
