Explain why is it often said that police departments are monopolies.

What will be an ideal response?

Answer may vary. Monopolies are companies, or service providers, that have no other competitors. Generally, communities have only one option when it comes to law enforcement. For example, if you live in Philadelphia, your option is to call the Philadelphia Police Department, or do nothing. Thus, as the only provider of law enforcement services in a community, the local police department operates as a monopoly in most jurisdictions.
