What were the needs of Mr. and Mrs. Snyder? As a couple? As individuals?
Emelia coordinated a Meals on Wheels Program for the elderly, and supervised 10 volunteers who delivered the meals. One day, when Emelia filled in for a volunteer and delivered a meal to the Snyders, she found Mr. Snyder very agitated and worried because Mrs. Snyder was missing. Apparently she had wandered off before. Because it was cold outside and they lived two blocks from a busy street, Emelia was alarmed and struggled with how to respond to this unexpected situation. As she tried to prioritize her responsibilities, she began to wonder if her volunteers were communicating with her and if they were well-trained for their responsibilities.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Snyder were clients in this situation. Each one needed to be assessed individually in addition to being assessed as a couple. Jim was diabetic and thin. He had not prepared food for himself in the past. Zelda had arthritis and was having ìdifficulty getting around.î She mentioned that she had started taking a new medication three months before and that it did not seem to help her arthritis. It also appeared that she had been wandering off at other times. Without support, this couple was at risk of nursing home placement. Mrs. Snyder¥s behavior was putting Mr. Snyder at risk as well; if she was placed in a nursing home, his ability to live independently could be problematic.
Mr. Snyder was a diabetic and may have needed help in managing his diabetes. Diabetes requires regular monitoring of physical status, medication, diet, and exercise. Serious problems such as infections and blindness could result when diabetes is not managed well.
