Some of the ncident rates—in 2002, child protective service agencies confirmed 896,000 cases of child abuse and neglect; approximately 1,400 children died of abuse and neglect in 2002; of the children who experience abuse or neglect, approximately 60% were neglected, 20% were physically abused, 10% were sexually abused, and 7% experienced emotional abuse. Some effects—fear reactions and phobic avoidance; re-enactment of the traumatic event via nightmares, traumatic play, flashbacks, and intrusive thoughts; dissociation or altered state of consciousness; loss of memory and loss of personal identity; avoidance of stimuli associated with trauma; emotional detachment characterized; negative sense of self and the future; heightened state of arousal, including sleep problems, exaggerated startle response, trouble concentrating, and aggression.
