The interviewer tries to get the interviewee to recall the scene mentally by using simple mnemonic techniques aimed at encouraging focused retrieval. These techniques include allowing interviewees to do most of the talking; asking open-ended questions; allowing ample time for answers; avoiding interruptions; and encouraging the person to report all details, no matter how trivial.
