The widespread use and abuse of mind- and mood-altering drugs in the U.S. is of relative recent origin. Until the early 1900s, drug abuse was confined primarily to artistic individuals and fringe groups seeking to enhance their creativity. Most American's were not seriously affected by any drug other than alcohol. One exception was opium, which was first used in opium dens on the West Coast and made its way across the country as a result of Asian immigration.
