James, a paralegal in a family law practice, is working with his supervising attorney who is representing their client in a domestic violence case. He is listening to the horrific story that the client is revealing during the interview. James has looked up the laws in his jurisdiction, but he and his supervisor see that this client may have some personal needs. To help the attorney better assist the client, James should know and do what with the approval of counsel?
What will be an ideal response?
James is already ahead of the game. He has familiarized himself with the local rules regarding domestic abuse. Hearing the client's presentation, James knows their client is a victim. He needs to find out what services are available to her and her children. She may require the basics such as food shelter and clothing if they must flee an abusive home. She may also need an order of protection for the family from her abusive spouse requiring him to leave the home, or enforcing any existing orders. The client may be so distraught, and the children so fearful, that counseling services are needed. The paralegal should keep a current list of professional referrals and public agencies for these purposes. It would also be a good idea to keep a camera in the office so that pictures of any injuries can be taken. He may need to provide information about obtaining support, a divorce, and exclusive possession of the marital home. Are there children? That adds a large number of additional considerations.
