List the divisions and subdivisions of the nervous system, and describe the functions of each division and subdivision
What will be an ideal response?
Answer will include that the nervous system is divided into two main divisions: the central nervous system and the peripheral system. The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord with the brain being the control center and communicating with the rest of the body through a large cable called the spinal cord. All the neurons outside the central nervous system are part of the peripheral system. The peripheral system is made up of the somatic system and the autonomic system. The somatic system carries messages to and from the sense organs and skeletal muscles. It controls voluntary behavior. The autonomic system serves the internal organs and glands of the body and controls all of the "automatic" functions within the body, such as heart rate, digestion, or perspiration. The autonomic system is divided into the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches. Both are related to emotional responses, such as crying, sweating, heart rate, and other involuntary behavior. The sympathetic branch is an "emergency" system, preparing the body for "flight or fight.". The parasympathetic branch quiets the body and returns it to a lower level of arousal as well as keeping vital processes, such as heart rate, breathing, and digestion at moderate levels.
