During pregnancy and up through the first week after birth, there may be a yellow discharge from the nipples known as colostrum. During lactation there is a white discharge of breast milk. Mastitis is an inflammatory condition of the breast that occurs most frequently in lactating women. It manifests as a local area that is swollen, painful, and erythematous and is usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Fever is usually present. A scaly, eczema-like erosion of the nipple, or persistent dermatitis of the areola and nipple suggests Paget's disease. This is a malignant neoplasm which is usually unilateral.
