The "Iceberg Detector and Echo Depth Sounder" was created by a former employee of Thomas
Edison. This detector directed a sound pulse underwater ahead of the ship as crew members listened
for the echo. An echo indicated a submerged iceberg. It was easy to direct the beam downward to
sense the distance to the bottom of the seafloor. Information can be found in the section The First
Scientific Experiments Were Undertaken by Governments.
