A.N. is ordered a special burn diet. She has always gained weight easily and is concerned
about the size of the portions. What diet-related teaching will you provide?
What will be an ideal response?
The patient who has sustained a burn injury needs extra protein and calories to promote wound
healing and support immune function. During recovery, she needs to eat approximately twice
as much as she did before the burn. In addition to her meals, she should also eat between-meal
snacks. Her body will use the extra calories in the process of healing, so she should not gain
weight.
