DIscuss the missionary movement in West Africa and the Kongolese attraction to Christianity.
What will be an ideal response?
The Kongo king Nzinga aNkuwa converted to Christianity and was baptized as Joao I, and his son and heir declared Christianity to be the state religion. The tribe was susceptible to the message of Christianity because they, too, traditionally accepted the duality of the universe and the existence of an afterlife. The tribe adapted the outward forms of Christianity to their own cultural practice. For example, the cross stood for the order of the cosmos and was a talisman of extraordinary power and royal authority, reminiscent of the shape of the iron swords that served as the symbol of Kongo political authority.
