As you both get up to leave, Mrs. J. suddenly turns pale and says she feels very dizzy. What
are you going to do?
What will be an ideal response?
Have her lie down and elevate her legs or sit on the floor with her head between her knees. Place
a cold cloth on her forehead or neck and get some juice for her. While you are doing this, ask her
questions: When did she last eat? Has anything like this ever happened before? Does she have any
medical conditions? Is she taking any medications? Take her vital signs. Continue to observe her
as you talk. If she becomes unconscious at any point, take her to the emergency department for
treatment. Tell her that you would like to take her to the emergency department for a checkup.
Use a wheelchair. Even if she refuses and wants to go to the SICU to see her husband, offer to take
her in a wheelchair, and inform the SICU nurses that she had a near-syncopal episode on your unit.
Document your actions in an incident report.
