Men and women see themselves as different. For instance, Julia Wood argues that men and women are two distinct co-cultures. Tannen argues that these differences manifest themselves in communication differences between men and women. Males seek hierarchical social order and "one-up" success, whereas women seek closeness, supportiveness and consensus. These sex differences in
communication are not biologically encoded into us, but rather, are learned social behavior.
