A cerebrovascular accident (or a stroke) occurs when the blood supply is cut off to the brain. An infarct or dead area develops.
Causes:
• Hemorrhagic—ruptured blood vessel
• Embolus—a floating clot lodges in a cerebral vessel
• Thrombus—a stationary clot forms within a cerebral blood vessel
• Compression—a space-occupying lesion (like a tumor) pinches off an adjacent blood vessel
