What do you think is the worst illegal drug in circulation in the United States and why?
What will be an ideal response?
Since alcohol is legal, government officials and other experts would tell you the answer is methamphetamines. On the streets it is referred to as Crystal, Ice, and Crank. Methamphetamines are very addictive and provide the hyperactivity effects of cocaine along with the delusional effects of LSD. As opposed to the short "high" from other drugs, this one will keep users high for 6 to 12 hours and create feelings of paranoia, invulnerability, increased strength, and euphoria, and may cause some to react violently. As for health concerns, it rots the teeth, suppresses the appetite, induces insomnia, and causes brain damage. Its ease of use makes it even more menacing because it can be swallowed, snorted, injected, or smoked, and it is cheap to buy or can be easily made by almost anyone.
Amphetamines can be found in virtually every community from the smallest towns to the largest cities and it radiates through all walks of life from the lowest to highest social classes. It is estimated that there are 26 million worldwide users of this drug. When law enforcement in the United States began to make a concerted effort to eliminate methamphetamine labs, supply then began to come from Mexico using routes already established by cocaine cartels.
Crystal meth is so powerfully addictive that nearly everyone who tries it becomes hooked. When the effects begin to wear off, the users feel ill. This is where their addiction kicks into overdrive. They need more. So they have to go find someone with some crystal meth for sale and buy themselves a ¼ gram for $25 and run back home, put it in their glass pipe, and smoke it until it's all gone and repeat this process over and over again, spending $25?$100 each time.
In the early stages of the meth boom, police officers were virtually powerless when stopping a car or searching a house and finding the ingredients to make the drug. None of the ingredients used to make crystal methamphetamine are illegal. Because they didn't find actual drug, they pretty much had to walk away. It's not a crime to have a pack of coffee filters in your kitchen cabinet or in the back seat of your car. It's not a crime to have a pack of AA lithium camera batteries in your home or car. Nor is it a crime to have a can of camp fuel, a bottle of lye or Drano, or even a box of Sudafed cold and sinus pills. State governments are spending enormous amounts of money in an attempt to control the damage caused by this destructive substance. It has been a losing battle since this evil material first surfaced.
