Discuss the Machiavelli’s The Prince in terms of the separation of church and state.
What will be an ideal response?
Machiavelli insists that to maintain power and sovereignty, the Prince must be practical at all costs. He suggests that rulers must relegate religious observance to areas not associated with rule, but he promotes allegiances between rulers and Church leaders. He had even planned to dedicate The Prince to Giuliano de’ Medici, who became Pope Leo X. Machiavelli’s advice was outside the norms of Christian morality of the sixteenth century, which did not support his practicality.
