Discuss some methodological issues in adolescent-adult transition research. In formulating
your response, consider methodological issues concerning part-time work research.
What will be an ideal response?
When conducting transition research, one must operationally define the transition event
(e.g., transition to college; first job), the transition period length, as well as relevant
adjustment variables. When conducting research on part-time work, researchers must
define who is working or not, and evaluate if the non-working adolescents have
worked in the past. Cross-sectional methods are problematic in this research, because
we do not know if an ability or problem was caused by work status, or was around
before the adolescent started working. The type of work and the number of work hours
are important to assess as well, for example, working over 20 hours per week is tied to
adjustment problems.
