Discuss the importance of a classroom teacher’s understanding of proper positioning and seating issues for students with physical impairments.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans:Proper positioning and seating are achieved through a wide range of special chairs and inserts that can go into a chair or wheelchair to achieve optimal positioning.
Proper positioning not only helps the student move as efficiently as possible, but it can also reduce deformity and promote feelings of physical security. If students are unable to move themselves, their position may need to be changed frequently throughout the day to avoid any stiffness or pressure sores (skin breakdown from staying in one position for too long).
A pupil may use several different positioning devices throughout the day. Some devices may allow the student to sit a certain way, while other devices help the student lie on his or her side, stomach, or back.
A prone stander may be used to support the individual in a standing position. Such positioning devices may enable students to participate in activities they would not be able to do from a wheelchair, such as wash dishes at a sink while positioned in a prone stander. They can also increase muscle strength and movement, stimulate bone growth, improve circulation, and increase the movement of food through the gastrointestinal system.
The physical therapist will determine the most therapeutic positions for the individual and the types of devices to use to help the student achieve these positions.
