Why is meditating so relaxing and refreshing? Discuss the effects that it has on brainwave activity
During a typical night of sleep, our mind usually takes an hour or two to settle down into deeper levels of brainwave activity and allow the deep healing to occur. Studies have shown that during meditation people are able to reach these deep levels of brainwave activity and enjoy deep rest in as few as five minutes. These meditators are aware and conscious, rather than asleep, as they meditate. Researchers call this level of deep rest while meditating a hypometabolic state. Along with the slowing of brainwave activity, other calming events take place in the body. The meditators' heart rates decrease dramatically and breathing rates slow dramatically. Both of these measures indicate a decrease in the stress response.
